About Brain Tumors
Each year approximately 190,000 people in the United States will be
diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor.
Brain tumor research is currently under funded and the cure rate is
significantly lower than that for many other types of cancer.
Brain tumors are the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths in males
ages 20-39 and the 5th leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women.
The five-year relative survival rate following diagnosis of a primary
malignant brain tumor is 32.7% for males and 31.6% for females. The
five-year survival rate for a grade IV glioblastoma patient is less than 5%.
Symptoms of brain tumors can vary, depending upon their location in the
brain. Brain tumors may affect memory, vision, emotion, thought, and mobility.
